World Chemical Expo 2024 Highlights Sustainable Innovations

The World Chemical Expo 2024 kicked off in Frankfurt, Germany, on Monday, drawing over 3,000 exhibitors and 80,000 attendees from 120 countries. Hosted by the Global Chemical Industry Federation, the four-day event focuses on "Sustainable Solutions for a Circular Economy," reflecting the sector's urgent shift toward environmental responsibility.
Key highlights include BASF's showcase of its latest bio-based polyurethane, derived from agricultural waste, which reduces carbon footprint by 40% compared to petroleum-based alternatives. The material has already secured partnerships with automotive giants like Volkswagen for interior components. "This innovation proves sustainability and performance can coexist," said BASF’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Martin Brudermüller, during the opening keynote.
Dow Chemical unveiled a breakthrough in plastic upcycling technology that converts mixed plastic waste into high-purity monomers using microwave-assisted pyrolysis. The process achieves 99% purity, enabling reuse in food-grade packaging—a first for chemical recycling. Meanwhile, China’s Sinopec displayed its carbon capture system, which has been integrated into its Shanghai refinery, capturing 1.2 million tons of CO2 annually for industrial reuse.
Panel discussions focused on regulatory pressures, with the EU’s new Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability taking center stage. Representatives from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) outlined stricter labeling requirements for hazardous substances, set to take effect in 2026. "The industry must align with global standards to avoid market fragmentation," warned ECHA Director Bjorn Hansen.
Networking events saw major deals announced, including a $500 million joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Mitsubishi Chemical to develop bio-refineries in Southeast Asia. The expo runs through Thursday, with a special focus on green hydrogen applications in chemical synthesis on its final day.
